Who we are

It also covers the web version of the app at https://learningabouthome.netlify.app/.

What we collect

Your account. If you sign up with email and password, we collect your email address and password. If you sign up with Google Sign-In, Google shares your email address and the display name on your Google account with us. If you tap Continue as Guest, we create an anonymous account with no email or name, identified only by a random ID so your progress can be saved.

Your progress and game data. We store what you do in the app so it is there when you return: completed lessons, Bhagavad Gita verses you have marked as learned, XP, streak, gems, weapons you own and when you last used them, and your Pilgrimage Passport stamps. For each passport site we record whether you learned its story, whether you visited it, and whether that visit was verified by location check-in or self-reported.

Leaderboards. Your display name (from your Google account, or the part of your email before the "@" if you signed up with email and password), your XP, your streak and the number of temples you have visited with a verified check-in are shown on the in-app leaderboards. Other signed-in users can see these. We also store the date you last collected the daily top 3 gem reward.

Location (Pilgrimage Passport only). If you press Check in here, your browser or device asks for permission to share your precise location once. We use it only to work out whether you are within 5 km of the temple you chose. Your coordinates are compared on your own device and are not sent to our servers, not stored and not shared. If the check succeeds, we save only that you earned that site's stamp. You can refuse, or withdraw permission later in your browser or device settings, and still use every other part of the app. You will not be able to earn verified visit stamps without it, but you can mark a temple as "I've been before", which does not use your location.

Messages you send us. If you use the Contact us form, we receive the message you write, your name and email address only if you choose to enter them, and the page of the app you were on.

Usage and device analytics. We collect basic analytics through Google Analytics for Firebase, such as app opens, pages viewed, approximate region, device type and a random app-instance identifier. This does not include your name or email.

On your device. Firebase stores a sign-in token in your browser or app storage so you stay logged in. If you use the app on the web, your browser may also cache app files to load them faster.

We do not collect any other personal details.

Features that involve other services

Temple Finder map. The map is loaded from OpenStreetMap, and a map code library is loaded from unpkg. When you open it, those services receive your IP address and the map area you view, as with any website. The Temple Finder does not ask for your location.

Listen buttons (Bhagavad Gita and Prayer Bank). These use the text-to-speech built into your browser or device. Depending on your browser or device, the speech may be generated by an online service run by its maker. Only the text of the verse or prayer is spoken. We do not send anything about you.

Temple photos. Some temple photos in the Pilgrimage Passport come from Google Maps and are credited to their photographers on the page. Using the passport does not send your data to Google Maps. Google's Terms of Service (https://policies.google.com/terms) and Privacy Policy (https://policies.google.com/privacy) apply to that content.

Why we collect it

Your email and password (or Google account details) are used to let you log in and save your progress.

Progress and game data are used to run the app: unlocking lessons, awarding gems, weapons and stamps, and showing your progress.

Leaderboard information is used to show rankings and to give a small daily gem reward to users in the top 3. It is not used for any other purpose.

Location is used for one purpose: to confirm you are near the site you are checking in at. It is never used for advertising, profiling or tracking your movements.

Contact form messages are used only to respond to you and to fix bugs or improve the app. Analytics are used only to understand how the app is used and to improve it.

How it's stored and who handles it

Your account details, progress, leaderboard entries and passport stamps are stored securely using Firebase (Authentication, Firestore and Analytics), services provided by Google. Contact form messages are handled by Netlify, our web host. These providers process data on our behalf. We do not sell your information, share it for advertising, or use it for advertising.

We keep your data for as long as your account exists, and delete it when you delete your account.

Your choices

You can delete your account and all associated data at any time from the app. This permanently removes your stored progress, passport stamps and your leaderboard entries. To delete your account, sign in, open the account controls, choose Delete account and type DELETE to confirm. If you cannot access the app, email us at the address below and we will delete your data on request.

You can turn off location at any time in your browser or device settings.

You can contact us to ask what data we hold about you, to correct it, or to ask for it to be deleted. Depending on where you live, you may have additional rights under local data protection law.

Changes to this policy

If we change how the app uses your data, we will update this policy and the date at the top.
